Week of January 3rd

Happy 2017! It sounds like every student had a busy, fantastic and at times relaxing break! We jumped right back into things! All of our Wonders stories were about weather with the Essential Question- How does the weather affect us? The wild weather that we learned about included thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes and blizzards. Students learned that they should be prepared for any storm so they may be asking for a box, flashlights and canned foods to create a safety kit at home! For writing, we are finishing up How-To and will be starting opinion writing. In FUNdations, open syllables were practiced. An open syllable ends with a vowel. Y can be a vowel and say the "i" sound at the end of a 1 syllable word or "e" at the end of a 2 or more syllable word. Our sight words were family, every  and city.

Topic 7 of Envisions Math is More Solving of Story Problems Using Addition & Subtraction. Students are solving addition and subtraction word problems with a symbol (?) as the unknown number in all positions. Strategies to use include models, drawings and equations.

We are continuing to complete our research and writing for our biographies.
