Week of November 30th
The Christmas countdown has begun. Only 21 more days until Christmas. I know that I still have a lot of shopping to do! We are tracking the days here at school with our own countdowns.
We finished Topic 5 in math. Topic 6 is continuation of subtraction with the strategies of regrouping and place-value blocks. We may complete this unit before the break but we will have to see as the schedule the next few weeks can be busy. I'll keep you updated.
Our story this week was Nation on Wheels. This story built upon our previous knowledge we gained from the Henry Ford Model T book from a couple of weeks ago. We learned about how cars are made, what companies make cars and problems cars can cause. Students got to design their own cars including the exterior, interior and special features of the car. The Gingerbread Man was also a part of our language arts as we read and compared versions of the gingerbread man. We also disguised a gingerbread man so that he would not resemble a tasty treat. Students wrote a persuasive piece on why their gingerbread man should not be eaten.
During extra computer time, students began to research their individual for the Wax Museum biography. The next two weeks, we will start to turn our research and reading into the rough draft written form. You child should have brought home a paper before the break with the name of their individual so they can create a costume for the museum in January. If not, please let me know and I will send it home again. As we continue to learn about the past and how things have changed, we read aloud As An Oak Tree Grows which shows how a tree remained as the world around it changed. We also listened to a personal favorite book of mine The Giving Tree and students read A Tree Is Nice.
Important Information:
* We will be having a pajama day on Thursday, December 17th.
* Our class Holiday party on Friday, December 18th will be from 11 to 12.
Thanks,
Marissa Wilhelm
