By Tuesday, everyone was asking how many more days we had left this week! It is always hard to get back into routine but by Thursday, everyone (including myself) was back into the swing of it. Mostly!
We did some math and writing with the New Year. Students updated their January calendars and we discussed the start of winter even with the 45 degree temperatures! Students wrote an acrostic poem with Winter. During centers, students created a Penguin Report and put arctic animals into ABC order. Our story of the week was Steve Jobs. We learned about he was an innovator at an early age and it all started in his garage. In writing, we created our own apps and wrote about our winter breaks. In Fundations which correlates with our spelling lists, we started the "r" control syllable. This week it was "ar" in car and "or" on horn. Next week, it will be "er" in her, "ir" in bird and "ur" in burn. Since the next two weeks are short weeks, there will only be 10 spelling words.
In math, we started and will finish next week Topic 7. Topic 7 is a continuation of addition and subtraction problems with the addition of an unknown number (variable). Students are learning and practicing how to use models, drawings, and equations to solve one- and two- step problems. The Topic 7 assessment will be next Thursday, January 14th.
We are plugging along with our biographies. We are finishing up our final copies and will be working on our final timelines next week. Don't forget your child will need a costume. Closets and Goodwill are great places to find what you need. If you have any questions, please let me know. Look for an "official" invitation next week. The date is Thursday, January 28th at 6:30.
