Week of February 16th

Many of us have been fighting some coughing and sneezing this week but it seems we are starting to feel better. For now! Everyone loved our stories from this week,  Balto and The Baltic Rescue. In The Baltic Rescue, a dog is rescued after being stranded on a piece of ice for 75 miles down river in Poland. Here is a short clip about the adventure if you want to watch: http://safeshare.tv/v/ss56c4c21c50c4b. We also wrote in our journals about if we would want to be a musher on the Iditarod and a student brought in the Balto movie for us to watch. There were many facts from the story that we saw come to life in the movie. We are a class of dog lovers! Our fairy tale writing is filled with magic, evil characters and castles. We hope to share them at conferences in March! Our spelling words continued last week's long e patterns of ee, ea and ey.

In math, we are nearing the end of Topic 9- Numbers to 1,000. Students seems to have a solid understanding of these skills as we are having great success with the lessons and moving through them quickly. We learned how there are 3 ways to write a number: Standard Form- 747, Expanded Form- 700 + 40 + 7 and Word Form- seven hundred forty-seven. Topic 9 Assessment will be next Friday, February 26th. Students will be bringing home a review sheet on Monday which will be due Thursday, February 25th.

We have officially started our science unit on Habitats. Students will be working with a partner to research and gather facts on a habitat. With this information, they will make a PowerPoint, food chain and collage. All parts of the project will be completed at school :) We have over a month to spend on this unit exploring and learning! This is a unit that all students love! Some of the habitats we will learn about include arctic, desert, forest, rain forest and oceans.

With President's Day on Monday, we took some time to recognize our present and former presidents. We wrote about what we would do if we were president and read a book filled facts about presidents. We also heard from Kid President who is a young man who is trying to make a difference even though he may be small and young. Our Scholastic News was about George Washington A.K.A. Agent 711.

Thanks!
