Week of February 22nd

Topic 9 is completed! When reviewing the practice assessment, students demonstrated a strong understanding of place value. In Topic 10 students will learn about models and strategies to add numbers within 1,000. The models and strategies include place-value blocks, open number line and partial sums.

Stellaluna was our story of the week. A personal favorite. A lesson from the story is that no matter how different we are, we can all be friends. Students retold the story including the beginning, middle and end. They also made a bat hanging upside down which to them is right side up! In their journals, they wrote about what makes them batty!  There was a lot about their siblings! We compared birds & bats and labeled the parts of a bat. Our FUNdations sounds were /oi/ which is found in the middle of the word and /oy/ found at the end of the word.

We dug deeper into the cave habitat as it was the setting of Stellaluna. For our habitat reports, this week we completed a KWL as we started our research. Then we started researching! Resources being used include books, fact sheets and online. Facts being researched include the habitat's environment, weather, non-living objects, animals, plants and adaptions/changes. Once all of the data is collected, students will make a PowerPoint in Media class to present their research.

On Wednesday, we jumped, jumped and jumped. Jump Rope for Hearts is a fun and exciting fundraiser. Everyone loved their dog lanyards. Thanks Mr. Hayne for putting this together!
