Happy February! On Monday, we celebrated the 100th day of school!
Were are 100 days smarter! To celebrate we wrote 100 words, made a mix with 100
treats and flipped coins 100 times. The 101st day of school was not nearly as
fun!
Our fairy tale this week was Little Red
Riding Hood. We read a traditional version and modern version, Little Red's
Special Sauce. In this version which takes place is a desert, Little Red
delivers a patch of chili to Grandma. She realizes that the coyote is tricking
her so she makes him eat an EXTRA SPICY patch of chili. Poor coyote ends up
eating mud pies to cool down! After we read the "spicy" version, the
class tried some spicy treats. I was amazed how adventurous everyone was! Some
of the students really like spicy foods! We tried Hot Onion Rings, Spicy Cheese
Crackers & Jalapeno Chips. (These were all purchased at Aldi for the
students who wanted to know) The Onion Rings were the spiciest! While the stories were very different, they
still had similarities like the girls were both traveling to grandma's, there
was a tricky character and there was food in both stories. Students also had
some time to work on writing their own fairy tales. We are in the final
planning stages with some students starting on their first paragraph. The hope
is to have these done by conferences next month. Writing can be a process but it
is always worth it when you have a completed, final copy!
We took the Topic 8 Assessment today. Now
some of us still need practice with time and money so even though we are moving
on, we will still be reviewing these important life skills. Topic 9 is place
value to 1,000. This includes reading and writing numbers to 1,000. Students
will also learn expanded, standard, and word form of numbers. These place value
skills will allow them to compare numbers and order numbers on a number line.
In Economics, we learned about goods and services. We also learned about being
a producer and a consumer. We had a great conversation about prices and how and
why they can be raised and decreased. Some students sure know how to shop
around and find the best deals! These are some of my favorite moments when
students share their own, unique perspective on "big world issues"!!
We sure seem to have all the answers!
Our Valentine’s Day part will be on Friday, February 12th
at 2:15. We will be exchanging cards so students will need 18 cards. I will
send a class list in an email so you have the names of their classmates.
Thanks,
Marissa Wilhelm
