Week of January 23rd

We have started Topic 8 lessons on counting coins. Most students have a solid understanding of identifying the coin and their values. Next week, we will practice counting both bills and coins. I am still decided on the assessment for Topic 8. We may take the assessment in two parts- time & money. I will update you are we make our may through next week's lessons.

In Wonders, our essential question was What makes different parts of the world different? Our stories were all about different regions including Alaska (arctic), forests (both tropical and temperate) and savannas. The comprehension skill for the week was compare and contrast. Compare being when items are the same/alike. Contrast is when items are different/not the same. A Venn diagram is a tool used compare and contrast items. Students worked together with partners or small groups to build dioramas of the different habitats. BEST part of the week! So creative and adorable. They were able to compare and contrast between the groups. Even groups that had the same habitats had differences in the animals and plants used.  We are continuing to work on opinion writing. We have a lot of opinions about a lot of things! Now, we just need to be able to write them in a paragraph starting with stating the opinion, supporting the opinion with SOLID reasons and a conclusion statement.

For our biography reports, we constructed our timelines. Using the Chrome Books, students researched a famous quote by their individual. Then, students typed the quote in a Google Doc. The best part was that they were able to change the font size, style and color!

Wednesday, February 1st will be our 100th day of school! I can't believe it!

Have a good weekend,
Marissa Wilhelm
