Our Essential Question for the week was What are the features of different animal habitats? Our stories included the habitats of forest, ocean, desert and a river. No matter the habitat, it provides and meets the needs of the plants and animals that live there. This was a good introduction to habitats as we will complete a science habitat unit at the end of the year.
In math as we work towards adding fluently to 100, students learned partial sums. Partial sums is when the tens are added together and the ones are added together. Then the ones and tens are combined for the sum. Here is an example:
65 + 27=
60 + 20= 80
5 + 7= 12
So, 80 + 12= 92
We also started learning regrouping which is another name for carrying over to the tens when the ones is more than 10.
To introduce our Long Ago social studies, we read the book As An Old Oak Tree Grows. It shows how one oak tree remained while the world around it changed. Standards that will be covered within the unit are time can be shown on calendars and timelines, change over time can be shown with artifacts, maps, and
photographs, science and technology have changed daily life and biographies can show how peoples’ actions have shaped the world in
which we live. There are several exciting activities that we will do throughout!
On Tuesday will be our Halloween celebration and parade. All are invited! We will be starting our celebration right away and continuing until the parade reaches us and finish up after. The parade usually gets down to us around 9:20ish. Students are to WEAR their costume to school and bring a change of clothes for after. We have gym at 10 so they will need to change before going to specials. Students are permitted to wear masks that are school appropriate. (Nothing too scary or bloody because we do not want to scare the younger students). NO weapons.
See you on Tuesday,
Marissa Wilhelm
