Our field trip to the library was GREAT! Students learned about force and motion including push, pulls, and gravity. Activities included magnetic sort, a catapult and weight on different planets. After we returned back to school. students wrote on a Goggle Doc about what they learned. Some items that students shared were: I saw that of you put a paperclip on brown paper it will still attract. I learned if you just went fast it would not fall down. My favorite part was the butterfly. When we learn about habitats in the spring, we will return to the library.
Students read a Scholastic News article titled Giant Pumpkins. So we did a few other pumpkin activities including a pumpkin sentence sort, the life cycle of a pumpkin and a pumpkin glyph with our buddies. This week, we started Unit 2- Animal Discoveries in Wonders. Our essential question for the week was How do animals survive? In A Visit to the Desert, students practiced the skill of making prediction and the strategy of plot. The plot includes the events from the beginning, middle and end of the story. We will wrap up these stories next week with it being a short week.
In adding to 100, students learned two new strategies. One is an open number line where you start with one addend. Then you make big jumps of 10 and small jumps of 1 to make the second addend. The second strategy was break-apart. This meant students needed to use their muscles to break-apart numbers into their place value. (i.e. 46 + 32= 40 + 30 (70) 6+2= (8) so 70 +8= 78. )
We had a great first W.O.W.! Next week the theme is Crazy Hat Day. We also had some fun all week with the countdown to Homecoming. Don't forget the parade at 10:30 tomorrow. Remember, we only have school Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday of next week. Conferences are on Thursday.
See you at conferences!
