Happy New Year! We are getting back into the swing of things after our extended winter break and long weekend! Next week's 5 day week is going to feel extra long! We celebrated the life of Martin Luther King Jr.. Students read a Scholastic News, created a timeline and listened to Martin's I had a dream speech. Students wrote about their dreams for the world.

Students are reading and researching for their biography report. Here is some important information you need to know: The Wax Museum is our academic night on Thursday, February 22nd from 6:30 to 7:15. We will complete all parts of the presentation in the classroom including a portrait, report, timeline and quote. However, we need your assistance in helping your child come to the Wax Museum dressed as their assigned person. We do not expect you to buy the costume but create it from items in your attic, basement, thrift store, grandma's attic, etc. There should be no face paint and wigs are allowed but not necessary. This is a fantastic night for our second graders to showcase their research and hard work. We hope to see family and friends!

Students brought home Topic 7 review yesterday. The assessment will be Tuesday, January 23rd. Topic 7 was continuing to practice solving addition and subtraction word problems with unknown numbers. Students learned and practiced how to use models, drawings, and equations to solve one- and two-step word problems. we will continue to practice story problems daily so a skill we will continue to build and strengthen.

We are in the final week of Unit 3 in Wonders. The essential question for the week was How does weather affect us? One story was all about tornadoes and another one about extreme weather of thunderstorm, blizzards and hurricanes. Our vocabulary taught us about storm warnings and watches. Also, how to prevent harm and danger during storms. Students created safety posters for extreme weather. The skill of the week was main topic (most important idea) and key details (tell, explain or are examples of the main topic).

Upcoming Events:

Fitness Club has started! It will be on Tuesdays until March 6th from 3:20 to 4:05. 2nd grade students are to exit the front main entrance. Older siblings may pick up younger siblings and go out their assigned door.
