Our essential question of the week was What makes different parts of the world different? We traveled up north to visit the great state of Alaska. We learned about the animals, plants and land features of Alaska, The Great Frontier. Other habitats we explored were rainforest and the savanna. Our skill for the week was compare and contrast. Students used a Venn Diagram to compare Alaska with Ohio. As a class we compared the tropical and temperate rainforests. In March for science, we will revisit habitats and students will be completing a habitat report here at school. As we continue to practice opinion writing, students worked to write about the best restaurant between Subway and Wendy's. It was pretty close tie. Things we like are the Frosty's, drive-thru, veggies for the sandwiches and the cookies! Ms. Hamker is helping us learn how to edit our work to correct errors like capital, punctuation, spelling and run-on sentences.
We are tackling the first part of Topic 8- Counting Coins and Bills. By the end of next week, we will have a quick check to ensure we are understanding the skills before we move on to the second half of the chapter- Telling Time. I'll send more information next week. At home this week, practice with your child counting coins. Students learned that they should order coins from greatest to least before counting. A pile of coins that included 2 pennies, 1 quarter, 3 nickels and 1 dime would be ordered quarter, dime, nickel, nickel, nickel, penny, penny. The counting would be 25, 35, 40, 45, 46, 47. Students practiced using the cent and dollar symbol.
Students have started compiling their biography posters. They are turning out GREAT! Mrs. Chernisky helped us make portraits in art. Thanks Mrs. Chernisky! Students will need a costume for the evening. Please use items you have around the home, basement or Goodwill. Next week, the second grade team will be sharing additional information that you will need for the evening. Save The Date: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd at 6:30.
Stay warm this weekend!
