We are 100 days smarter! Students wrote that over the last 100 days they have learned about editing, money, verbs, story problems and arrays. We celebrated with a 100 day snack, made 100 cents as many ways as possible and wrote about what it will be when we are 100.
Our essential question for the week was How does weather Earth change? Our vocabulary included slope, properties action and island. One expository text titled Into The Sea explained the process of erosion and how some changes are slow. Erosion is caused by water or wind. A student brought in a bar of soap that showed how the water had changed the bar of soap! So erosion is everywhere! The second text titled Volcanoes talked about the fast changes that occur on Earth. We learned that some good can come from a volcano as the ash adds nutrients to the soil and plants thrive. Next week, we are going to experiment with making our own volcano! The strategy of the week was cause and effect. It is often easiest to first identify the effect- the WHAT happened and then the cause- WHY did it happen.
In writing, we are continuing to focus on editing. We added run-on sentences to our editing list. There are 2 ways to fix a run-on sentence. First, make 2 sentences. Second, combine the 2 sentences with a conjunction. FANBOYS is an acronym for a list of conjunctions to use: for, and, nor, but, or, yet and so. Mr. Ebert visited us this week because several students had written him letters asking if the class could take a field trip to Target. Students gave solid reasons like they would be learning about money and needs and wants. They also flattered him by saying they would buy him something, he could come and that he was the best principal in the world. Even after ALL of that and he said he was impressed, he said that he wish we could but we are only allowed one out of city field trip.
In Scholastic News, students learned about Ruby Bridges, a seven year old who stood up for what she believed in even when it was hard and people were mean to her. We had a great conversation about being brave and making the right choices which are not always the easiest ones. An email went home this week with important information regarding the Wax Museum. Here is what you needed to know:* Students should arrive in their costumes and ready to go. They will be standing and in a "statue" position. No face paint. Wigs are allowed but not necessary.
* Students may bring a prop (i.e. stuffed animal, flag,
basket, etc.) but the only place they will have to sit it is on the floor.
* Students should arrive between 6:15 to 6:25. They
should report to their classrooms. The closing will be announced around 7:10. At this time, students should roll up and take their poster presentations WITH them. This will allow them to safely get their hard work home.
* The museum will open at 6:30 so we ask parents, family
and friends to remain in the lobby areas until the museum opens. An
announcement will be made when the exhibits are open.
* Each class with have their own assigned entrance/lobby
for the museum. Please enter through your child's assigned door. This will help
with traffic flow and allow everyone to first see their child and their class.
We are wrapping up the money portion of Topic 8. We have a mid-topic assessment next week before we start the time portion of the topic. At the end of the topic, there will also be a final assessment.
A Look Ahead:
* Tonight is the Glow Walk. Prepaid students brought home an envelope with that they need. Tickets are still available at the door.
* Our Valentine's Day Party is next week on 2/14 from 2 to 3. Here is the sign-up. Students may bring valentines for the class. We have 22 students.
* Yoga starts next week. Here is the waiver that must be signed and returned.
* Conference Sign- Up.
* Wax Museum- Thursday, February 22nd from 6:30 to 7ish.
Thanks!
