We are in our LAST month of second grade!
To start our final science unit on Weather, meteorologist Jon Loufman from Channel 19 News visited us. We brought along his knowledge of weather to teach us important vocabulary and weather tools. We learned that many of the tools used in weather are greek so they have the ending -meter like thermometer and anemometer. Did you know that we live under an ocean? An ocean of air called the atmosphere. His presentation and experiments were fun and a great introduction to our unit. He said that on Sunday he may share some pictures from the presentation on the news! Our stories for the week focused on plant myths and life cycles so each student planted some wildflower seeds. They have the space, air, water and soil they need. We already have some sprouts! This week, each habitat group presented their Google Slides to the class. It was great to see how much each group learned about their habitat including plants, animals and interactions.
We completed our mini unit on Geometry and took our final MAP test of the year! Next week, we will start Topic 11- Subtracting Within 1,000 using Different Strategies. In FUNdations, Topic 8 is r-controlled syllables. That r is one bossy letter who does not let the vowels say their short or long sound. Ar says /are/ and or says /or/. Students are LOVING cursive and are doing so good with it. Some students have better cursive than print! Geography is our next unit of social studies as we read Mapping Penny's World to introduce maps but we have already seen quite a few of maps throughout the curriculum.
Next week:
Tuesday, May 8th- Students will be going to the high school for a music filed trip to learn about instruments.
Wednesday- We will be switching our lunch/recess schedule with 1st grade so we will eat at an earlier time.
End of the Year Activities:
Bike To School Week- May 21st
Field Day- Friday, May 25th
