We won the GOLDEN SNEAKERS for being the quietest class in the hall this week!

We got A LOT accomplished with this 5 day week! Students took their first math test on Adding & Subtracting to 20. This is a foundational skill as we will build upon it and add to 100 and then 1,000! We jumped right into Topic 2 because it is about MULTIPLICATION!!!!! Your child is learning about equal groups of numbers and how to use arrays to find sums. In this topic, your child will also identify even and odd numbers, and show whether or not they can be divided into two equal parts.  This is a short & exciting topic.

In E.L.A., we are practicing writing a friendly letter for the times when a email or text won't do the job! Students and I wrote letters back and forth. Then, they got a secret buddy in the class to write to. Next week, we will begin to write to our pen pals who are second graders in Mrs. Harcula's class at Erieview! Our stories for the week were all about how families are the same and different. No matter the family, all families have homes, celebrations, food and LOVE for each other! Some of the places our stories look us were Brazil, Chile and India. Our skill for the week was identifying the characters, setting and events of a story. The events include the beginning, middle and end. We are taking the end of week assessments together right now so students can have modeled how to be successful when reading for information. First, read the questions and identify the key details. Then, when you go to read, you already know what important information you are looking for. Sight words of the week were shall, pull and full.

In social studies, students are learning what their rights and responsibilities are. Also, how different settings have different rules. Science started this week with the introduction of Habitats. Habitats are homes for animals and plants that meet their needs. Their needs include food, water, shelter and space. On Friday, we visited the ALPL to learn more about habitats with some help from real pill bugs!  For a team building activity in the Innovation room, students worked together to build a home for Henry (emoji class pet!). The goal was to create a habitat that would keep Henry perched up away from any predators.

A LOT accomplished! Nothing on the calendar for next week except we have a special assembly on Wednesday morning.

See you Monday!
