Week of February 25th

Feels like the first full week we have had in awhile! Next week, is a 3 day week agin. Conferences are the evening of the 6th and all day on the 7th. If you have not yet signed-up, click HERE. We celebrated Read Across America this week with reading, reading EVERYWHERE! Students read in the hall, at gym, with buddies, in the classroom and with special guest readers! Our Scholastic News was about if Dr. Seuss created the Lorax based off of a real monkey. We are convinced!

Our genre of reading this week was drama so students enjoyed reading parts and performing the stories together. With the essential question being How can we understand nature? one story taught how the sun & moon ended up in the sky (it was water's fault!) and how beetles got their colors. Also, each drama had a theme which teaches a lesson on how to be a good person by helping each other and the world we live in. Vocabulary for the week included holler, plenty, similarities and victory.

Students are very successful with applying their previous strategies for addition to numbers to the 1,000s. We will take the review together in class on Monday and take the assessment Tuesday. Monday night, please look over the review and provide any additional practice. Students do NOT have to understand an/or use all strategies but have a go to one to use and be able to explain how and why it works.

In social studies, we started Geography. Students explored a variety of maps and found similarities in them including compass rose and legends. We read the book Mapping Penny's World and then students hid a coin around the room and had to make a map to reveal where their treasure was. For our Force & Motion unit, students read about magnets and did an experiment to determine what items are magnetic.

The week of May 10th is InView Testing. Here is additional information you should have received about the testing:
In March, your child will be given an assessment to provide the district with information related to his or her cognitive abilities. The Ohio Department of Education requires public schools to provide whole-grade screenings. These screenings are held once during the K-2 grade band and once again during the 3-6 grade band. Avon Lake City Schools administers these whole-grade screenings in Grade 2 and again in Grade 5. Presently, Avon Lake uses the InView Test of cognitive ability. This assessment supplies the district with information needed to direct educational services. The assessment is nationally-normed, and the results will be provided to families before the
end of the school year. The assessment will be given by your child’s classroom teacher to allow for the most comfortable test-taking environment. The InView Assessment is scheduled to take place during the week of March 11th. There is no specific way to prepare for this assessment; however, a good night’s sleep and a well-balanced breakfast is recommended.

See you at conferences next week!
