Week of March 18th

Friday was the end of the 3rd quarter which means the end of the year is right around the corner! This is always a bitter sweet time of students showing they are ready to move on but me wanting to keep them! But we do still have quite a bit to accomplish over the last quarter.

Thanks to all of those dads, grandpas, uncles and friends who came and were a part of the Donuts With Dad.

Days/Events To Remember:
* The week of April 1st begins our One District, One Book campaign. Look for more information to come home next week. Students will be receiving a copy of the book and a at-home packet to complete for prizes.
* We will be taking our spring MAP testing on Friday, April 12th and Monday, April 15th.
* Spring break begins Friday, April 19th with school resuming on Monday, April 29th.

In math, we are starting Topic 12 & Topic 13- Measuring Length. Your child is learning different ways to measure length. This topic focuses on estimating and measuring the length of objects to the nearest inch, foot, and yard, as well as to the nearest centimeter and meter. For each lesson for the remainder of the year, students will have a 3rd page attached to their daily school work. This 3rd page is a homework/extra practice page. This is NOT mandatory but as you have time, please practice and reinforce these life skills at home. If a page is mandatory, I will send an email so you know.

Our essential question for the week was What do good citizens do? One story called The Difficult Decision has us discussing how sometimes the right decision is not the easy one. Returning something that you wished was yours is hard. Vocabulary for the week included determined, rights, responsibilities and champion. We also read Grace for President. With this story we discussed point of view and summarizing. Our story also had us discussing voting, the popular vote and electoral college. A bit off topic (!) but we all learned a lot about our democracy.

In FUNdations, we are learning about r-controlled syllables (-ar in car, -er in her, -ir in fir, -or in horn and -ur in burn). Different combinations make different sounds. But letter r is ALWAYS bossy and does not let the vowel say its name or sound. We are continuing on learning the lowercase cursive letters. We learned the letter a this week. Our grammar skills for this week and next is contractions and pronouns.

We went to the ALPL and learned all about forces and motions. Experiments includes magnets, space travel, static electricity and catapults! Students may be asking to do some of their own experiments! Make sure to use paper and plastic for the tablecloth experiment. NO glass!

Thanks!
