In Topic 12, students are learning to estimate and measure using customary and metric units. Some real life objects that students can visualize to determine the correct unit are: thumb for an inch, book for a foot, a baseball bat for a yard, a button for a centimeter and the width of a door for a meter. We also made some comparisons for measurements like a inch is about 3 centimeters, a yard is about the length of a meter and there are 12 inches in one foot. At home, have conversations with your child about the length of objects both using customary and metric. You can play I Spy Measurement... I spy something that is about 4 inches long. The Topic 12 review will come home next week and be due back on 4/5. The test will be on 4/8.
Our essential question for the week was How do people get along? Soccer Friends taught us the theme of winning is not everything and Once Upon A Baby Brother taught us how to get along with each other (even including annoying sibling!). Students had to write a would you rather opinion piece on either being an only child or having 8 siblings. It was a pretty close split between the two! A vocabulary word for the week was patience which we all need to practice a bit with our siblings. Our strategy for the week was summarizing which is retelling the story in a sequence (B, M, E) in our OWN words. So not just rewriting everything that happened but retelling the most important details from the story. The skill of the week was point of view which is determined by the clues the characters leave in their words and actions.
