Week of April 1st

Image result for the world according to humphrey

There is so much excitement about Humphrey! Students are so excited everyday to turn in their questions from the night's reading. Keep reading this weekend!

Students conducted a Sink or Float experiment where they first predicted what they thought 10 items would do and then tested their hypotheses. Everyone thought that a dollar bill would sink for sure and 24 hours later, it is STILL floating! As a finale to our Force & Motion unit, we visited the Innovation Room where we did centers that included catapults, magnets, ramps and balloons.

Today, we went over the Topic 12 Review. The test will be Monday. Next, we are going to hop over to Topic 15- Shapes & Their Attributes. Your child will learn to identify and draw two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional cubes. He or she will use vocabulary associated with these shapes. Your child will also partition a rectangle into rows and columns of equal-sized squares and count to find the total number of squares. This is an important foundation skill and used when finding the area of rectangles. Vocabulary for this topic includes vertices, quadrilateral, polygon, right angle, edge, faces, thirds and fourths.  After Topic 15, we will go back and finish 14.

Our essential question for the week was What do heroes do? The genre of biographies were used to teach us about heroes. Students read about the lives of Cesar Chavez, Bessie Coleman and Kate Shelley. These individuals were willing to sacrifice themselves to help others.  The strategy of the week continued to be summarizing and the skill was sequencing. Students are doing well with their cursive letters. Once, we complete the lowercase letters, we will work on writing words and sentences!

Coming Up:
* Year-End MAP testing is coming! 2nd Grade will test on Friday, April 12th and Monday, April 15th. If you know your child will be absent one of those days, please let me know so we can make arrangements for them to test with another class.
* Marco’s box night is Tuesday, April 16th.  If you order, your pizza will arrive in a box decorated by your child!
* Spring Break starts on Friday, April 19th and school resumes on April 29th.
* Our History Museum field trip date had to be changed. We will be going May 30th. Spacing is limited so once we have all of our numbers, I will provide more information,

Thanks!
