Week of September 7th

We got a lot accomplished in just four days this week. In English Language Arts, we discussed bonus letters (f, l and s) and continued to learn about nouns. Our story was The Enormous Carrot and we described the three parts of the fiction story (beginning, middle and end). We also planted our own carrot seeds so we will have to wait and see if we will be able to make our own carrot cake, carrot soup or carrot ice cream! We also learned the parts of a friendly letter as we will be writing a friendly letter to the camper-of-the-week (start student) starting this week.

Our math test is on Tuesday so we finished and reviewed Topic 1. Our review went extremely well on Friday which tells me we are ready for the assessment. We had a good discussion about how we learned all of these different addition and subtraction strategies so that students can find one that works best for them. It was interesting to hear how students are understanding and using the different strategies. As this is our first assessment, we will work through it together. Topic 2 is a shorter unit with 5 lessons on evens and odds and arrays (the beginning understanding of multiplication).

We are completing our narrative writing brainstorming and graphic organizers so we are ready to start our rough drafts. On Friday, we took a moment to recognize the heroes in the community who sacrifice themselves for us and others. Students described heroes as individuals who are brave, strong, helpful, caring and so much more. It was my favorite activity from the week!

Other items:
* There was quite some excitement from outside our class windows as the workers prepare to put a video camera in the eagle tree. Soon, we will be able to view the live streaming from our classroom. It was very fitting the one of the eagles was there on Friday to check-in on the progress!

* Constitution day is Thursday so students can wear red, white and blue. Throughout the day we will be learning about constitution that was established as our country was just forming and we still use today.

* Guidance starts next week with Mrs. Speier, our Guidance Counselor. She will be teaching us about bravery. We are excited to have her come in over the next few weeks,

Thanks,
Miss Wilhelm
