Week of October 28th

Happy Halloween! Thanks you to all of the moms, dads and grandparents who were a part of the party and those of you who sent items in! We had a "spooktacular" time enjoying our snacks and making a ghost hand print. I hope you have a safe and exciting Halloween. Our class was filled with snow queens, ninjas, a wolf, Night Wing, a G.I. Joe, an artist, a vampire, scary figures in masks, cats, Disgust, Pocahontas, a famous singer, a gladiator, black belt and girls from Decadents. This week to go along with Halloween, we did a few activities. We started to learn about adjectives so we made Frankensteins that we used adjectives to describe. We also made complete sentence and place value spiders.

This second quarter we will be learning about long ago and biographies.  We are already having so much fun with these themes! We began by reading about Daniel Boone and his life long ago. Then we read a book that compared Long Ago and Today. There were many difference but also some similarities. Our book for the week was Colonial Times. We used a venn diagram to compare and contrast. Like the colonials, we made our own butter! We put heavy whipping cream in a mason jar and starting shaking! After each student shook 20 times, we had butter. Delicious butter that we gobbled up with a loaf of bread. My favorite event from this week was our mini-museum. Thank you for sending in items! The students loved seeing real objects from long ago. We ended up with so many different items like money, books, pictures, a camera, a coffee grinder, kitchen tools, music, games and more. I have a record player that we listened to. Much different than an I-Pod!

In math we are working through Topic 4 which included lessons on the break apart and regrouping methods. I am impressed with how quickly they are learning regrouping. Once they get it, they love it!

Happy Halloween,
