The next couple of weeks our E.L.A. and science curriculum are integrated. This week's book was The Power of Magnets. Some vocabulary that we learned included repel, attract, north & south pole and current. We also learned that iron is a metal that attracts and that magnets are everywhere including blenders, phones and credit cards. Boy, did we love working with the magnets. We made hypotheses about what our magnets would do and then experimented with them. Someone discovered that magnets on top of the desks could be moved with a magnet inside the desk! Students made a magnet by rubbing a magnet across a nail which allowed the nail to become magnetic for a short time! The nail was able to collect 2 to 3 paper clips! We also did a magnetic and not magnetic sort.
In math, we completed Topic 2 with arrays. I was impressed with how well we did with the beginning of multiplication. We will be returning to this skill again soon. Topic 3 is addition up to 100 so this will include double digits. Several different strategies are introduced. We will be skipping around the topic starting with 100's chart.
In FUNdations, we started suffixes. We reviewed s, es, ing, er and est. We will learn the sounds of /ed/ next week. With the short week, we will only have 10 skill words with NO pretest. Our field trip is next Wednesday in the morning so please make sure students are at school on time. We will be leaving right after the morning bell rings. The field trip is about Force and Motion with hands-on experiments. Guidance came for our 2nd lesson this week on bullying and being confident.
No school on Monday because of conferences. I look forward to seeing you all then!
Thanks,
Marissa Wilhelm
