As part of our social studies curriculum, we brainstormed what the students wanted in their classroom. We came up with a list of YES! and NO! things we wanted to see, hear and do in the classroom. Here is the list of rules we decided on:
1. Work as a TEAM
2. Be RESPONSIBLE for your actions and words
3. LISTEN to others
4. Be RESPECTFUL to everyone and everything
5. Be KIND
6. Do your BEST
These rules will make Room 14 a place where all students feel safe and can learn!
We started Topic 1 in Envisions Math- Fluently Add & Subtract to 20. We are learning several strategies for finding sums (vocab words for the answer to an addition problem) and differences (vocab word for the answer to a subtraction problem). Some strategies include counting on & back, making ten and doubles & near doubles. We also took our first timed test with adding +0. As of right now, our first week will be the week of September 10th. I'll let you know more next week as we get closer.
We also started our stories using Wonders. Our essential question for the week was How do friends depend on each other? In Little Flap Learns to Fly, we learned that friends can encourage us to try new things. Students visualized how Little Flap felt when he looked down from a tall branch not thinking he could fly on his own. In Help! A Story of Friendship, we discussed gossip and making sure we believe what we know in our hearts not what someone else tells us. Students retold the story using key details. We write across the day and in all subject areas. In addition, we will have writing pieces for the year. First up is friendly letter. This week we learned about the 5 parts of a friendly letter- heading, greeting, body, closing & signature. In FUNdations, we are learning closed syllables which must have ONLY 1 vowel that has one or more consonants to close the vowel sound (i.e. ship, snack, vest).
We tackled A LOT this week and did great! Next week is a 4 day week with no school Monday. We will have Math MAP testing on Thursday. Here is information for the AL SOUPER Bowl
Enjoy the long weekend!
