Christmas is in the air! We have had music practice this week in preparation for The Holiday Program next Wednesday, December 13th. 2nd grade performance is at 1:45 to 2:15. Students broke out in song the other day during class because they are so excited for the performance! Mrs. Orr and them have been working SO hard!
We all survived Topic 5 and have transitioned into Topic 6- Subtraction to 100 Fluently. In this topic, students are learning how to regroup (a.k.a. borrow) to subtract. So for the problem 71-23, students will cross out the 7, make it a 6. Then add that group of 10 to the 1 ones to make 11. Students are really starting to get the hang of it. We are going to take the Topic 6 test before the break. We will complete the review here in class but students will have homework assignments next week to practice at home so look for those. After the break, we will review story problems with addition and subtraction with and without regrouping.
Our essential question for the week was What can we see in the sky? Our stories where both fiction and nonfiction. From the nonfiction story, we had a great conversation about Earth including the equator, the earth's layers, constellations, rotation and phases of the moon. One of the students may be an astronaut one day with all of the questions and interest! Students created their own constellation, named it and wrote about it. Opinion letter is going well as students are writing to Santa to let him know that the reindeer are striking! They have to convince him to use another animal like eagles, horses, unicorns or dinosaurs. That would be quite a sight! We completed Unit 4 in FUNdations on suffixes.
In social studies we continued with comparing now and long ago especially how technology has made such a difference. Also, we started talking about the upcoming Wax Museum. It is not until February but my hope is to have students choose their person before break. That way we can get started as soon as we get back! I'll send home the name of the person so you know. All of the project will be completed here at school :) except for the costume.
Next Week:
* Wednesday is the Holiday Program @ 1:45.
* MAP testing on Thursday.
* Our Holiday Party with be Wednesday, December 20th from 9 to 10. Also, that day will be a school-wide Polar Express Day so students will be able to wear their pajamas and we will be having a school-wide event in the afternoon.
Keep warm!
