Week of May 21st

3 more days of second grade! No school Monday because of Memorial day. Thursday is our last day!

This week we read Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and reviewed the skill of story elements. Students also found all of the weather vocabulary in the book including blizzard, fog, tornado and clouds. We learned more about tornadoes including how they form and the scale used to measure them. An experiment allowed students to shake their own funnel cloud using water bottles. Another experiment we started 2 weeks ago for the water cycle was to place a cup of water by the sun and see if it would evaporate. Today there is NO water left! And nobody spilled or drank it!!!

Our last Wonders story of the year was Money Madness which reinforced our economics vocabulary of consumer, producer, supply and demand. Students created their own business where they had to determine if they would be offering a good ( bracelets, cookies, lemonade) or a service (car wash, babysitting, dog walking). They also had to determine the cost and how they would spend their money. As a class, we read The Hard Times Jar about a girl who really wanted to buy a book but her family didn't have the funds for it. So she made her own books and borrowed some from school without asking. She learned the lesson that sometimes the right thing to do is not the easiest.

Our Scholastic News for the week was about a wheelchair racer. Students compared his wheelchair bike to their bikes. We also discussed the importance of helmet safety this week as students rode their bikes to school. Our first grade students stopped by so we could present our habitat reports. They were such a good audience! In math we went back to geometry and practiced more with 2-D shapes including triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon and hexagon. Did you know a 7 sided shape is called a heptagon? We reinforced that the 3-D shape of a cube is a solid figure with 6 faces, 8 vertices and 12 edges.

Enjoy the long weekend!
