Week of September 24th

September is COMPLETE! We celebrated a great start to the year with a Stuffed animal celebration! Well deserved for everyone's hard work. The first week of year we did a team building challenge with having to make a paper chain using one piece of paper, one glue stick and one pair of scissors. Well, redemption came this week as we tried it again. EVERY group were able to make their chain longer than the first time!

With October starting next week, Walk On Wednesdays will begin. Here is the schedule including the theme for each week:

Oct. 3rd – Cleveland Pride, AL Pride, etc.
Oct 10th – Hat Day
Oct 17th – Bright Colors (wear your brightest colors)
Oct 24th – Invite a friend – come walk with us at 1:30.
Oct 31st – Halloween Parade

We complete our Topic 2: Work With Equal Groups and the took the assessment. While we are done with the topic, we will return and review it throughout the year. Topic 3 is Add Within 100 Using Strategies. In this topic, students will learn to add two-digit numbers using place-value strategies on a hundred chart, open number line, break-apart and compensation. One first strategy was 100's chart. To use it, start at a number on the chart. As you move down from the number, the number increases by 10 for each square. As you move to the right from the number, the number increases by 1 for each square. While exposed to a variety of strategies, students need to find their go to strategy which they are most comfortable with.

Our Wonders essential question of the week was How do we care for animals? Students experienced having a pet egg for the day! They had to create a shelter that protected their eggs. Some students also feed their eggs by sharing their snack! One of our stories for the week was Lola & Tiva, a true story of a girl who cares for a rhino whose mom could not care for. She had to feed Tiva 5 gallons of milk a day and give her a mud bath to keep her from getting a sunburn. So students may soon be asking for a pet rhino!? Sorry! This week, students attempted the weekly reading assessment on their own. We have been practice whole group and small group but today this week they tried it on their own. This is a hard skill but something we will work on ALL year long. Our trick words for the week were both, walk and talk.

Our habitat for the week was the Rainforest. We read books and watched videos so we were able to research the plants, animals, nonliving and changes of the habitat. Our class bar graph showed that our favorite rainforest animal was a jaguar.
