Two new strategies that we learned for adding to 100 was open number line and break-apart.
Here is what an open number line looks like: You want to start with one addend. Then take big jumps of ten and little jumps of 1 to make the second addend. Where you end up ifs the sum!
In break-apart, you break the numbers into ones and tens which you then combine. An example being 52 + 24 = 50 + 20= 70 2 + 4= 6 so 70 + 6= 76. The Topic 3 Assessment will be on Wednesday, October 17th. The review will be due back on Tuesday the 16th.
We completed the final week of Unit One in Wonders. The essential question was What happens when families work together? This topic allowed for us to discuss what students want to be when they grow up. We have a class of teachers :), interior designers, military, naturalists, paleontologists, and a singer! At a job, you make a good or provide a service. The skill for the week was key details and the strategy was ask & answer questions. Good readers THINK while they read about asking questions about what they are reading. In grammar, we learned that the who or what of a sentence is called a subject. In writing, we learned about narrative writing which includes words like I, me, my, we, sequencing words (first, the, next) and a beginning, middle and end.
Our habitat for the week was forest. We took a tour of our woods to brainstorm items from A-Z that could be found in a forest. In our research we learned that forests are changing because of the need for land and wood.
I will see you at conferences on Thursday! No school THURSDAY or FRIDAY for students.
Enjoy the 80 degree temperatures!
