Topic 3 is complete in Envisions and students are armed with a strategy or two for adding two 2-digit numbers. In Topic 4, your child will learn fluency to 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. In this topic, we will learn partial sums and regrouping. Regrouping is carrying over from the ones to tens.

Our habitat for the week was the desert. Students learned how the saguaro cactus provides shelter from a variety of animals even after it dies. They can live for up to 200 years. In A Visit to the Desert, Tim does not think he wants to visit his grandma in Arizona until he gets there. As he took a walk, he sees a tortoise, jack rabbit and Great Horned Owl. He quickly adapted and got use to the desert and ended up LOVING it. Vocabulary included adapt, climate, sense and freedom. The strategy of the week was making predictions by using what you already know and what you are reading. The skill was plot which is the events that occur in the beginning, middle and end of the story. This skill also appeared in our narrative writing. Students brainstormed an event that happened to them. They will retell the event using personal pronouns (I, we, us) and sequencing words (first, next, then). We made comma guys & gals to help us remember the 4 places commas can occur: dates (October 19, 2018), letters (greeting & closing), lists (cookies, milk, napkins, and cups) and sequencing words (first, next, finally).

In FUNdations, we learned the 5 closed sounds exceptions: olt- colt, old- cold, ost-post, ild- wild and ind- find. These vowels should be short because they are followed by consonants BUT they are not. They are long vowels so they say there name. The trick words are pretty, done and goes. In grammar, we starting nouns. Our Scholastic News was all about spiders! We compared the nonfiction article with a fiction book about spiders. Did you know that there are different types of webs? Students made a spider web in the Innovation room.
