Topic 6 in Envisions is Fluently Subtract Within 100. Your child is learning how to subtract 2-digit numbers. In this topic, they will learn important subtraction skills, such as regrouping and using or drawing place-value blocks to subtract. They also will learn how to use addition to check the accuracy of subtraction problems and solve problems that require two steps to find the solution.
The big question of Wonders Unit 3 is What about the world has surprised you? This week, we explored the surprises of the earth's forces and how they affect us. This acted as an introduction to a science unit we will see in the 3rd quarter. Our first story was ALL about magnets. Students learned about how magnets repel or attract. Also, North Pole is not just for Santa as each magnet has two poles- north and south. Our second story was all about gravity. We learned about how Sir Issac Newton determined that what goes UP must come down! Our last story of the week was about how forces (either a push or pull) can change the position of an object and the speed. Across all of the stories, we worked on the skill of authors purpose. When an author writes, he must have a purpose and the audience in mind. He or she may be trying to inform, describe or explain.
With our how-to writing, our purpose is to explain how to decorate a Christmas tree. We have a class tree that needs some Christmas flair! Our grammar skill of the week was more plural nouns like sheep, geese and women where you do not add an -s or -es. In social studies, we are working on our research for our individuals so we can begin to build a timeline of their lives. To practice, we learned about Ruby Bridges and made a timeline of her life. Students liked to her how a young girl like them can stand up for equality and change.
See you in December!
