Week of December 3rd

This week was BUSY with music practices, Snowflake Shop, Innovation hour and MAP testing! Thank you to PTA and those of you who were able to be a part of the Snowflake Shop. It is a favorite holiday activity for EVERYONE! The students loved their time in the Innovation Room with Mrs. Brady as they learned about coding. She was so impressed with our class that next time she is going to show them how they can make their own game. Can't wait for that in January! Students worked extremely hard on their Reading MAP test this week. Remember we will take the Math MAP test on Thursday, December 13th.

With only 9 days of school before break, here is the plan for math. We will take the Topic 6 assessment in math on Monday. In class Friday, students had the time to work on the review sheet. Then, we "reviewed" the review sheet. Some students did not complete the sheet so they filled in the work as we went over it. Please review these sheets this weekend and any problems missed. Topic 7 in Envisions is More Solving Problems Involving Addition & Subtraction. This topic is a continuation of skills we have been practicing all year long and will continue to practice! Students will learn and practice how to use models, drawings, and equations to solve one- and two-step word problems. This is a short unit so we will actual work our way through it before the break. There will be no formal assessment but a quick check. That means when we come back from the break, we will be in my favorite topic of the year... Topic 8: Work With Time & Money!!!! So over the break have some math talk with your students are you are using bills and coins to pay for presents and time as you are running around to spend time with family and friends.

Week 2 of Wonders had using asking What can we see in the sky? All of our stories this week were filled with vocabulary words like moonlight, dreamed, delighted, grumbles and neighbor. Good discussions came from our stories as we learned about the differences in the day and night sky. Also, we read about constellations, how the sun does not move, how the moon does and how the stars look small but there are actually big. The skill of the week was sequencing (beginning, middle and end) which we have been practicing in our how-to writing. In writing, we decorated our class tree this week and wrote the steps we used to get it looking merry & bright. The supplies we needed were: tree, lights, decorations, tree topper and garland. It is BEAUTIFUL! On their own, students wrote a how- to wrap a present. Using a lot of tape is always a solution for wrapping! In grammar, we learned about possessive nouns so I'm sure they will start showing up everywhere!

In social studies, we completed a timeline for George Washington and worked on our own Wax Museum timelines. Remember to save-the-date of Thursday, January 31st for the Wax Museum. Over the holiday weekend may be a good time to look through the closets and basements of families and friends to see if they have anything you can use for your costume.

Stay Warm!
