Week of December 10th

Thank you Mrs. Orr for putting on a beautiful holiday program! Thank you to the families for coming and the students for all of their hard work practicing and preparing for the show.

Next week is a 4 day week with the winter break running from Friday, December 21st to Wednesday, January 2nd. School resumes Thursday, January 3rd. Next Thursday, December 20th will be a school-wide Pajama Day. Students must wear shoes to school but they can bring slippers to wear. We will also have our class holiday celebration that day from 11 to 12. Please join us!

In math we will have started and are finishing (!!) Topic 7 before the break. Topic 7 is More Solving Problems Including Addition & Subtraction. Your child is continuing to practice solving addition and subtraction word problems with a symbol for the unknown number in all positions. In this topic, your child will learn and practice how to use models, drawings, and equations to solve one- and two-step word problems. We will start topic 8 on Telling Time & Money after the break. Talk about these skills over the break as you go to a movie and discuss the starting times and the length of the movie. Have students add & subtract the money that they receive & spend over the break.

In grammar, we have moved onto verbs. We started with action verbs and how the describe the movement/action of the nouns of the sentence. Our stories this week were all about How can people help out their community? In one story, we traveled to Columbia to learn about how Luis decided to share his love of reading with others so he packed up 2 burros and traveled to faraway villages sharing books along the way.

In social studies, we created the timeline of Rosa Parks and learned how she stood up for what she believed in. Students made connections with our lessons with Mrs. Speier and standing tall to be an upstander! Over the break maybe a great time to start to pull together costumes for the wax museum on Thursday, January 31st. Nothing needs to be purchased so check closets and basements:)

We have some fun planned for next week!
Thanks,
Marissa Wilhelm
