Week of October 30th!

Happy Halloween! Thank you to everyone who sent something into the party, came to the parade or were a part of the party! It was a spooktacular day! Our Scholastic News for the Week was all about Halloween treats! Before Halloween was all about treats, children use to receive toys, apples and nuts. The Egyptians over 3,00 years ago received honey on Halloween.

Students did an amazing job with regrouping in Topic 4! We have some kings and queens of regrouping. Topic 5 is Subtracting Within 100 using strategies. Students will see strategies they learned in Topic 3 for addition back for subtraction like 100's chart, number line, break apart and compensation. In this topic, your child will also analyze information to model and solve one and two-step word problems.

Our essential question for the week which we will finish up next week was What are features of different animal habitats? In our first story of the week, students read a narrative nonfiction about prairie dogs. Prairie dogs adapt to their climate of heat by creating underground burrows filled with rooms for resting, eating and using the bathroom! Students are working together to build a class burrow! Our skill for the week was identifying the main topic and key details of nonfiction. Students worked with a partner to read The Tree Of Life to identify the main topic of  a eucalyptus tree meets the needs of animals. The details included providing food for koalas and a home for termites. In grammar, we learned that nouns can be singular or plural. Plural is more than one and MOST of the time, you add the suffix -s. dog, dogs    truck, trucks  Students had a great conversation how there are examples when the plural is the same as the singular like sheep and moose.

For our first part of the Habitat research project, students used the Chromebooks to find pictures of what their habitats looked like before and now due to changes made both by the Earth and people.

Guidance with Mrs. Speier starts next week. On Friday morning, I will be out for District meeting but will be back in the afternoon. In the afternoon, we will make our wish lists at the Bookfair. Here is the sign-up to help.

Stay dry this weekend!
